Tactical masterclass from Rocky Cycling Club

The women's Keirin race on Saturday night.

By Rockhampton Cycling Club

Saturday afternoon racing saw a few new faces at the Kenrick tucker velodrome. Keirin’s are always a fun tactical race.

Riders draw their starting positions behind the motorcycle from numbered sticks. Most riders have their favourite position in the line up and watching their faces as they discover the number they have chosen is almost as entertaining as the race itself, well not really.

The motorcycle sets the pace for the first three laps after which it pulls off with approximately 750m to go for the riders to then execute their strategy.

Riders may move out of the line as long as they do not accelerate past the motorcycle until it has left the track.

The rider drawing position 1, must follow the motorcycle at a reasonable distance and cannot move from this position unless another rider is willing to take their place. This means leaving position 1 is a gamble as it relies on another rider willing to take your position or you will be disqualified.

A Handicap race followed the two Keirin races and the riders were tested with Championship distances. Five laps or 1666m for U17 and above, 1000m for U15 and below with a good distance head start for the younger divisions to even out the field.

A five race program meant the racing started a little earlier to make sure it was all fit in comfortably. As three of the races were only 5 laps maximum it evened out quite nicely to be all finished by an early mark of 8.00pm.
