A popular event during many Pineapple Festivals was the raft race.

In 1978 the race was held in Rosslyn Bay Harbour in the area now occupied by the Keppel Bay Marina.

Competitors not only had to make their own raft and paddle it to complete the set course, but had to avoid the bombardment of flour bombs, tomatoes and eggs from other competitors.

The winners’ trophy was the ‘America’s Crapp Cup’.

At 1.5 metres tall with a chamberpot on top, it was claimed to be the tallest trophy ever presented.
