Mysterious bird identified

Keith Ireland snapped this Little Shrike Thrush on a tree on his property,

Sometimes it can be very frustrating to be able to hear the loud ringing call of a bird in the trees nearby but without being able to see the bird, and not knowing which bird it is.

This happened to us day after day for over a week. It was only by pure chance that I happened to be looking out of a window when a car was coming down our driveway.

In the tree beside the entrance, this unknown bird gave out the call that we had been wondering about. For once it was on an open branch so I had a quick look at him before he took off away from the vehicle.

I needed to go through a bird textbook because I had not seen this bird before. It took me some time searching and I needed to check two different books before I could be sure that it was a Little Shrike-thrush.

Later I saw it in one of our trees once more, when I was able to snap this photo. Although we didn’t see it again after that, we knew by its call that our bird stayed around for about two weeks. This bird is at home in most environments from the rain forests to the yards and gardens on the lowlands.

This species was previously known as two different species.

One was called the Rufous Shrike-thrush because of its rich brown under-feathers, and was found in the northern coastline of Western Australia, and across the top of the Northern Territory.

The second group named Little Shrike-thrush was down the full length of the Queensland coast and into Northern New South Wales. Now the two species come under the one heading of the Little Shrike-thrush.
