Explaining the collector’s mind

The Australian Decorative and Fine Arts Society Rockhampton will welcome Claudia Chan Shaw to Rockhampton on Saturday, 22 April, where she will give her entertaining and informative illustrated presentation, ‘Collectomania – the Mind of the Collector’.

The lecture starts at 10.30am, at St Theresa’s Church on the corner of Bolsover and Albert Streets in Rockhampton.

The multi-talented creative Claudia Chan Shaw will be familiar to many as the presenter of the ABC TV series Collectors and, more recently, Antiques Downunder for Channel 9.

These programs benefit from her eclectic interests and the fact that she has been an avid collector all her life. Besides her work for television, Claudia has also presented a weekly radio program Arts Fridays in Sydney for more than 10 years and is a published author.

As an artist and creator, Claudia Chan Shaw is a director and the designer for the fashion label Vivian Chan Shaw and her exquisite handmade pieces are to be found in collections worldwide, including the Powerhouse Museum in Sydney.

Besides teaching design at universities and speaking to a wide variety of groups and institutions, Claudia leads Art Deco tours around the world. She is an installation artist and curated the City of Sydney’s Chinese New Year Festivals from 2016-2018 (the largest such festival outside China) – it is Claudia who created the ‘Three (not so) Little Pigs’ installation for the Year of the Pig (2019); designed ‘The Ratrobats’, eight acrobat Rat sculptures for the Year of the Rat (2020) and The Warrior Ox for the Year of the Ox (2021) all for the World Square Sydney Lunar New Year Festival.

It is her rich and varied professional experience that informs her illustrated presentation in Rockhampton. Claudia Chan Shaw developed a penchant for collecting of all kinds at a young age – tin robots, Humphrey Bogart posters and much more.

As she grew older she realised it had become an obsession and that there were others who felt the same.

As host of the ABC TV series, Collectors, Claudia would encounter many people of the same ilk, people for whom one bakelite radio or first edition was too little and 100 of them was not enough.

In this richly illustrated lecture, Claudia Chan Shaw takes us into the mind of the collector.

There are not too many of us that don’t have a collection of one sort or another that we treasure and add to whenever we can. If you have a collection or two, why not go along on Saturday morning to hear Claudia explain the ‘collector’s mind’ and learn a little about her passion for collecting.

All are welcome to attend, free for members and $25 for visitors (2023 Memberships still available).

The presentation will be followed by the famous ADFAS morning tea with Claudia.
