I have mentioned in previous segments about my trips to Lady Elliot Island which is a fairly short aeroplane trip from the aerodrome at Bundaberg.
It is an early rise to be there on time but the earlier the start the better as there is a lot of the island to try to cover before the return trip which leaves at 4pm.
They have a lovely morning tea on arrival and later a delicious luncheon. I got so absorbed in my photography that I almost missed both.
Initially everyone is welcomed to the island and given some history of it. This was where we first met up with the White-capped Noddies.
In contrast to the other Noddies known as Common Noddies, these birds don’t nest on the sand. They build a flimsy nest of sticks up in the trees.
The nest pictured here, with a parent and baby sitting in it, was right beside the steps going up onto the verandah of the Recreation Building.
Cameras were clicking away flat out all around us, everyone keen to get some photos of this lovely sight. At the same time as we were there, a group of Asian tourists were there also.
They weren’t on our plane so may have come by boat or even arrived the previous evening. However I have never seen such an excited group of people.
I’m sure just having the birds so close at eye-level would have been a major highlight and talking point for the rest of their trip and their whole holiday.
As the illustration shows, these birds have a white colouring on the top of their head hence their name. They also have another name which is the Black Noddy.
