Swans build a nest

Keith Ireland snapped this photo of a male and female Black Swan and their nest.

One of the best known of all our different birds would have to be the Black Swan.

As the illustration shows, their nest is a large combination of a lot of grass and other vegetation which is carried back from anywhere near the waterway.

Both male and female build the nest together. The particular nest shown here, provided an excellent opportunity to be able to photograph these gentle birds.

A friend of mine drove me out to his dam as these birds were building. We parked well back from the dam but in a good position to see the nest.

Because of the distance to where the birds were building, I left the car and walked slowly round to stand behind one of the thick posts from where the light and the angle were excellent.

Not that they wouldn’t have been able to see me but by standing still and resting the camera on the post, it seemed to be enough protection for them.

The two birds drifted slowly back towards the nest allowing for some lovely shots of the pair with their reflections. The smaller female swam round to the far side of the nest and began pulling at the vegetation.

The male came in from the side I was on. After an inspection of what they had done previously, both birds climbed up on to the mound and began pulling out and changing some of the pieces that they had set up previously.. This provided more great shots of the two on the nest.

Some weeks later on, I went back and we followed the same procedure as previously.

This time, the two adults were swimming together with their batch of six little chicks.
