Coast camping popular in 1950s

Years ago, camping at the local beaches was extremely popular.

This photo from December 1952 shows campers at Kemp Beach. There were also camping areas around the Bluff, at Mulambin Beach and the Causeway. People sewed flour bags together to make a floor for the tent and relied on pressure lanterns for lighting.

Campers at Kemp Beach shopped for supplies at the shop at Mulambin Beach or the Causeway shop.

Blocks of ice were delivered from an iceworks in Yeppoon and the milkman delivered the milk.

Most afternoons, people played beach cricket. The Causeway wasn’t as silted up in those days and the fishing attracted a lot of campers.

Unfortunately, coastal erosion has destroyed a lot of Kemp Beach since this photo was taken.
