Something different

The end of August always brings the flowering features that brighten the garden.

After months of the Winter chill shrubs in our garden are starting to benefit from the warmth through the days.

I just love this time of the year because of the beautiful displays flower colour in our town.

Then there is those very unique plants that not every gardener has seen, little lone planted, that can become a major feature at this time of year.

Acacia semilunata or the Moon Wattle is a medium sized, silvery green-foliaged shrub, growing to around three metres high, with masses of bright yellow flower balls that are clustered together at the end of the branches, making a fine display during July and August.

The common name is derived from the semi-moon shaped foliage that this plant possesses.

This particular shrub has a special significance for me, as it was the very plant that I ever propagated from seed, and planted within the garden at home.

Grevillea Gypsy Moon is a fast growing medium to tall shrub with light green foliage.

Unique large bird attracting yellow-gold flower appear most of the year and develop a red blush as the flower matures.

It will grow to about 2.5m high and 2m wide in a sunny drained position.

Grevillea Gypsy Moon will respond well to pruning and that will help to maintain compact shape.

Ixora timorensis or Native Ixora is a large dense shrub with attractive large green leaves with wavy edges.

Cluster of white flowers with noticeable yellow stamens that age to cream will appear from Summer through to Autumn.

These flowers have a strong vanilla-honey perfume that will remain heavy in the air in the early morning and evening.

This rainforest shrub should grow to 2m high in most protected garden positions.

It is a native of Far North Queensland, the Cape and parts of Northern Territory.

Rondeletia odorata or Panama rose is an evergreen shrub with crinkly oval army green leaves.

It produces fragrant reddish orange flowers during late summer to autumn.

The flowers will attract a number of different Butterflies species during the flowering period.

It will grow best in sunny position protected from the hot Western sun but can tolerate some shade.

Rondeletia odorata can grow up to 1.5m tall in well-drained garden soil.

Ruellia colorata or Brazil Torch can be an eye catching feature to a garden as the long lasting fiery red bracts poke through the surrounding dark green.

This stunning flowering shrub thrives in the shade and will flower in the shade too.

This beautiful shrubby plant will grow from 60 to 90cm high.

Ruellia colorata is native to the tropical forests of the South American countries of Ecuador, Columbia, Brazil and Peru.

Ruellia colorata is very suited to shade or semi-shade positions in the garden or as a tub plant.

Tibouchina Chameleon is a naturally dense, fast growing dense evergreen shrub.

It flowers best in Spring and Autumn but can flower during other times of the year.

Flowers start pure white in colour then ripen though lavender-lilac to deep mauve shades as the flower mature.

Left unpruned it should grow to 1.8m high and 1.8m wide.

It prefers a protected full sun position but will tolerate a small amount of shade.

Westringea Sea Mist is an attractive shrub with attractive narrow golden variegated narrow shrub.

This variegated form of Westringea Wynyabbie Gem will grow about 1.5m tall by 1.5 m wide.

Clusters of small lilac-mauve flowers appear mostly in Spring but will also spot flowers throughout the year.

It is a great plant for coastal gardens withstanding salt and wind beautifully and is also tolerant of frost and drought.

This shrub would be one of hardiest variegated shrubs you could grow in this region.

Wrightia Arctic Snow is a beautiful compact semi-deciduous shrub with glossy green foliage.

During the warmer months Wrightia Arctic Snow can be covered in 2.5cm pure white star shaped fragrant flowers with yellow centres.

Growing to 1.5m high it prefers to grow in a full sun and will tolerate part shade.

Wrightia Arctic Snow makes a good container plant and can even be used as a hedging plant.

So any one of these plants could give become a major show piece in your garden.
