Tamoi trawler in Ross Creek

The Tamoi, owned by Tom Nielsen (snr), was one of many fishing trawlers using Ross Creek.

It was successfully refloated after grounding on Yeppoon Main Beach in January 1961 and continued operating for many years.

Ross Creek is only navigable at close to high tide but was the major safe anchorage for the boating fleet until Rosslyn Bay Harbour was built.

To make navigation more reliable, a set of white pointed ’leads’ were positioned near the breakwater, with one being visible on the far left of the photo.

This photo probably dates from the early 1970s as the Yeppoon Hospital and Sisters’ Quarters in the background were demolished when a new hospital was built and opened in 1977.

– Today’s photo is from this year’s Historical Society calendar, which is available from our premises at The Bunker, at the rear of the Yeppoon Town Hall, 9.30am to 12.30pm on Tuesdays and Saturdays.
