Time trials at Alton Downs

D Grade/Junior Podium: 2nd Trisha B, 1st Paris S, 3rd Summer H.

By Rockhampton Cycling Club

It was a very crisp morning with a good deal of dew to make the air just that bit colder with moisture for the latest round in the Rockhampton Cycling Club road racing calendar.

Cold fingers, noses and toes were experienced by all with quite a few shivers before the first rider took off at 7:30am down Nicholson Road to 4.4kms, making it an 8.8km around trip. Some would say Nicholson Road is a nicely undulating strip but this morning it was cruel to say the least with cold pockets in the hollows to make the journey all the more arduous.

The morning did not warmup before the start of the A to C grade individual time trial, if anything the cloud cover that came over brough the temperature down by a degree or two.

The seniors went out at 1 minute intervals to traverse the 17 km squarish loop down Nicholson Road, Alton Downs/Nine Mile Road, Hunt Road and back up Ridgelands Road. The undulating nature of the course surely tested the legs and resolve of all the riders with cold noses and burning lungs.

Individual Time Trials are all about the rider, the road and the clock. A constant battle between mind and body to extract as much as possible in the shortest amount of time. Putting in the maximum effort to the next corner, up the next hill, down the next side and then do it all again until the final straight which looks all downhill until the last 300m when you start the “gentle” struggling incline to the finish line.

Congratulations to the winners and well done to all the riders who braved the cold morning and went home to a hot chocolate and if they were lucky enough a Pizza Guardians pizza for lunch that day. Probably not much happened in the afternoon.

Thank you to our volunteers – Kyle Brannigan (Commissaire), Gavin Hopes (Time Keeper), Trisha Brannigan (Nominations), Stu Wright, Leah Brannigan and Paul Parker (Assistance Cars), Renay Buchanan (First Aid), Peter Buchanan, Diane and Carl Stjernqvist (Signs and Corner Marshalls) and Chaperone Neville Hare.

A big shout out to our 2022 Road Series sponsor, Komatsu Mining. Thank you for supporting regional cycling and the Rockhampton Cycling Club. Thank you also to Pizza Guardians for providing vouchers for our winners on the day.
