Reduced yarding at Emerald

Emerald agents yarded a reduced offering of 1050 head at the Thursday, 29 May, sale, with much of the yarding comprising prime cattle.

The prime market recorded solid gains of 8–20 c/kg across all categories.

Store cattle numbers were limited, and with no consistent lines presented, no formal quotes were established ahead of next Tuesday’s dedicated weaner and feeder sale.

The prime section bullocks over 550kgs sold to 319c/kg to average 305c/kg.

Heavy steers 500-550kgs coming under slaughter and feeder competition reached 315c/kg to average 304c/kg, while heavy heifers over 400kgs made to 306c/kg to average 298c/kg.

Heavy cows over 520kgs topped at 288c/kg to average 270c/kg, cows 450-520kgs made as much as 291c/kg to average 264c/kg, while bulls over 600kgs sold to 250c/kg.

In the store section, there were not enough heavy feeder steers 400-500kgs to quote on while 350-400kg steers topped at 394 c/kg, and averaged 340 c/kg, 280-350kg steers made as much as 394c/kg to average 316c/kg and with only few steers 200-280kgs there were no quality lines to quote on.

Trade feeder heifers 350-400kgs sold to 296c/kg to average 262c/kg, 280-350kg heifers topped at 306c/kg to average 222c/kg, heifers 200-280kg’s topped at 292 c/kg, to average 242 c/kg.

The Berry and Gifford family, Kyewong, Dysart, presented a large draft of Droughtmaster-cross cows and heifers.

The cows sold to a top of 281 c/kg, with the lead pen returning $1,723 per head.

Heifers reached a top of 305 c/kg, weighing 535 kg to return $1633 per head.

The Stewart family of Terang, Comet, offered a line of EU Brangus-cross cows, which sold to 291 c/kg, with the lead pen returning $1806 per head.

The Sibson Family of Cotherstone, Dysart, sold a draft of Brahman-cross cows that topped at 275 c/kg, averaging 654 kg to return $1800 per head.
