It’s time to Explore Rockhampton

With t-shirt weather all year round, Rockhampton is the perfect destination to host a major sporting carnival, and that’s exactly what we’re doing in the coming weeks as we welcome two fantastic state sporting events to the Rockhampton region attracting over 10,000 people.

We kick off the end of June with the Queensland Country Rugby Union Championships for the very first time in Rockhampton, hosted by Capricornia Rugby at the Victoria Park sporting fields on Friday 30 June, 2023.

The event is expected to attract between 700-800 players and their families at the end of June this year and will be held in Rockhampton again in 2024.

The Queensland Country Rugby Union Championships are contested in U13 to open levels for both men and women from South Queensland, Central Queensland and North Queensland.

The event is an exciting acquisition for Rockhampton and a great opportunity for our local sporting teams to show the rest of the state what we’ve got!

As we pack down from one event, our local accommodation operators welcome an influx of guests as more than 3000 junior touch players from across Queensland arrive in Rockhampton with their families to represent their affiliate in Rockhampton for the Queensland Touch Football (QTF) Junior State Cup.

The QTF Junior State Cup is the premier junior affiliate competition in Queensland.

The event will be held 6-8 July 2023 at Cyril Connell Fields and Norbridge Park in Rockhampton and will be held in Rockhampton biannually for the next ten years, which is a great win for our region.

Rockhampton Regional Council and Advance Rockhampton have worked closely with the organisers of both of these events to secure them in our region and are proud sponsors of both events.

Hosting sporting events of this size presents a significant boost to Rockhampton’s visitor economy.

According to Tourism Research Australia, visitors spend over $28 billion per year on domestic travel and these events are another way to increase visitation to our region, fill our hotel rooms and increase spend in our tourism and hospitality businesses.

Promoting our region to peak bodies such as Queensland Junior Touch and Queensland Country Rugby Union aligns with Advance Rockhampton’s economic development strategy, and we will continue to promote our world-class sporting facilities and advocate for events like these over the coming years.

We are looking forward to welcoming the competition’s players and families to our region and showing them all of the great things you can do when you explore Rockhampton.
